Digital Eye Strain

Children tend to hold devices closer and their larger pupils absorb more blue light. This puts them at a higher risk of Digital Eye Strain (DES)--also known as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS)--is a group of symptoms associated with the overuse of digital devices. They include:

Dry, itchy eyes
Blurred vision

Irregular Sleep Cycles

Blue light suppresses the release of sleep-inducing melatonin, keeping us awake longer and disrupting our circadian rhythm (internal clock). This is an especially tough issue for adolescents whose circadian rhythms are currently making their natural shifts. Normally, the pineal gland in our brains releases melatonin a few hours before bedtime, reaching its peak in the middle of the night.

Cognitive Impact

The CDC reports that children spend 9 hours a day in front of a screen for entertainment. Schools are now requiring children to learn from tablets, as schools have transitioned to a digital platform. Blue light is emitted from the digital devices being used, because of how close children hold the device as well as how long they are using them.
