Everyone is exposed to blue light daily. Blue light occurs naturally and artificially. From the wrong sources, blue light can cause many different issues. Children are becoming exposed to blue light at a very young age, which can lead to harmful side effects.

The sun naturally emits blue light which is beneficial. Artificial blue light can come from tablets, lights, tv’s, computers and cell phones. Your child is exposed to blue light at school while they study on tablets, and at home while they watch tv or play on their phone.

Natural blue light is beneficial for a few reasons. The sun gives off natural blue light which helps regulate our circadian rhythm. This means that the natural blue light helps to keep us awake during the day and asleep at night. The blue light stimulates us and keeps us awake.

Digital Eye Strain

Digital eye strain is a technical term for eye fatigue, which is caused by blue light. Blue light is emitted from digital devices. So, what does that mean to you? If means that while your child is at school learning and reading from their tablet, they are exposed to blue light. When they come home from school and watch TV to relax they are still being exposed to blue light.

At night, when your child lays in bed on their cell phone or tablet, they are exposed to blue light. It is important to realize that the muscles in our eyes have not evolved to look at digital screens for long periods of time, it would be many centuries before that evolution could take place. Children are still developing and strengthening the muscles in their eyes, so the stress placed on their eyes from blue light can make them feel even more uncomfortable as they are more susceptible to blue light.

Digital Eye Strain is a group of symptoms that include:

  • Eye Fatigue
  • Dry eyes
  • Headaches
  • Neck/ Shoulder/ Back pain
  • Reduced Attention
  • Irritability

While Digital Eye Strain is not permanent, it is aggravating and uncomfortable. Young children, in particular, may find it more distracting because they aren't able to effectively communicate their symptoms.

Inadequate Sleep

At Exigo Optical Eyewear, we know you want to feel confident your child is getting adequate rest. In order to do that, your child needs a consistent sleep schedule. The problem is the blue light emitted from digital devices delays the release of melatonin, causing a disruption in the circadian rhythm (biological clock) and will keep your child awake and alert long after bedtime. This causes you to be up all night with worry.

We believe that you and your children shouldn’t have to struggle with the symptoms related to lack of sleep. We understand how difficult it is to see your child suffer which is why we offer maximum protection and the highest level of blue light filtration available in our non-Rx lenses. So, order now. In the meantime, download our free guide: Tips for Winding Down Before Bedtime.

Is bedtime tough? Do you find yourself arguing with your child about 5 more minutes watching TV or playing on a tablet? A poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation found that more than two-thirds of children experience frequent sleep problems. [6]

  • The blue light that your child is exposed to throughout the day delays the release of the sleep hormone, melatonin. Blue light increases alertness and can reset the body’s internal clock to a later schedule.
  • Before blue light was emitted artificially, the sun was the only source of blue light. The blue light from the sun during the day would help keep kids alert and when the sun went down, blue light was removed and melaton in was released, helping them fall asleep at night.
  • When the sun goes down and the natural blue light is removed, your child should start to feel sleepy however, if they are watching TV and playing on electronics, they are still being exposed to blue light, which makes them alert and bedtime tough.
