Blue Light Filter Glasses Eye Protection

Too much blue light can be bad for the eyes, especially your children’s eyes. Effects of too much blue light include sleep disturbances, eye strain, and even a condition called computer vision syndrome.Throughout human history, we have been exposed to blue light as part of sunlight. But, in the electronic, computer, and internet age, we get an extra added dose of blue light from digital device screens. While we don’t stare directly at the sun, we do spend hours working at computers and staring at the screens of tablets and smartphones. Your children, especially, are at risk of the unwelcome effects and potentially lasting damage of blue light.Fortunately, blue light filter glasses eye protection can help prevent both the immediate effects of blue light and reduce the risk of long term eye damage. We are going to look briefly at how blue light causes problems and then how blue light filter glasses provide a good defense.

Problems Caused by Blue Light

Macular Degeneration

The “hidden” risk behind blue light has to do with an eye condition called macular degeneration. In our article about blue light damage in the eye, report on how blue light damages mitochondria, the little energy factories that make human cells work. The bottom line to the research is that prolonged exposure to high-energy blue light wears these little factories down and can eventually result in mitochondrial damage followed y cell death. When this happens in the retina at the back of the eye, the most important vision cells in the area are lost and the macula “degenerates.” This is a common cause of legal blindness in old age.Unfortunately, with the advent of a lot more blue light exposure at younger and younger ages, our children are at increased risk of this eye disease and quite possibly at earlier ages.

Blue Light-induced Sleep Disorders

Modern digital device screens and many other products use a very energy-efficient means of lighting called a light emitting diode or LED.This cost-efficient means of lighting is now common in television sets, smartphones, tablets, and personal computer screens. As we noted in our article about LED's and why you cannot sleep, these not only are responsible for sleep problems but also digital eye strain and computer vision syndrome.

The way that blue light from a digital device screen keeps us awake is by suppressing the secretion of melatonin. Melatonin is a substance that the brain makes when it is it time to get some rest. The natural way this is produced is that when the sun goes down and the blue light goes with it,melatonin is secreted and it helps the brain restore itself with a good night’s sleep. When you keep watching TV into the wee hours expecting to sleep, you would do better by reading a book by the light of an old incandescent light bulb. And, when you child sneaks his smartphone under the covers to play “just one more” game, he or she is postponing the natural secretion of the chemical that paves the way to a good night’s sleep. Many mood disorders in adolescents and younger children can be traced back to late night blue light exposure.

How Do Blue Light Filter Glasses Protect the Eyes?

Blue light filter glasses block just the blue and ultraviolet light of the visual spectrum from passing through the lens and entering your eye. They do this by using specific materials in the lens or as a coating. It is important when shopping for blue light filter glasses to go with a high-quality product. Because blue light glasses reduce or totally block light from the blue end of the spectrum, they greatly reduce the exposure of the back the eye, the retina, from causing damage to the mitochondria (and reducing risk of eventual macular degeneration). And, when you spend the day at the computer or your child spends the day working with a tablet at school and using a smartphone at night, both of you are reducing the likelihood that these devices will interfere with your sleep.

Many suggest that we simply quit watching the TV late in the evening or not use a computer, smartphone, or digital device in the hours before bedtime. But, this the digital age! You probably “read books” using a digital device and everyone deserves a chance to relax in front of the TV or by playing a game on their smartphone at the end of the day. The great part is that when you use blue light filter glasses, you negate any problems with blue light exposure and can go on with your life normally.

Are Blue Light Filter Glasses a Cure-all?

Blue light filter glasses protection is for blue light. It is not going to help reverse the effects of staring at the computer screen all day, poor posture at your workstation, or the addictive effects of too much video game time. An excellent policy for folks who work at computers all day is the 20, 20, 20 rule. Every twenty minutes look away from your computer. Focus on something at least twenty feet away. And, do this for at least twenty seconds. Lots of computer-related headaches, eye strain, and general irritation will be avoided by using this simple routine. To this rule add the suggestion that once an hour you get up from your workplace or put down your digital device. Walk around, go refill your coffee cup, use the bathroom, and talk to a real person face to face instead of texting in cyberspace.

Children really need physical play time and taking “recess”to walk around, run, and play is important to growth and social development. And, doing these things also put our digital devices into perspective. They are great tools in our digital age but they need not be masters of our lives.Teaching your children this valuable lesson should be a requirement of parenthood.

All of that having been said, there are several valid concerns about the long term effects of blue lights on vision and very real concerns in the here and now with sleep disorders, headaches, and more. Blue light filter glasses eye protection is the smart way to go.
