Child Can't Sleep? Is It Because Of Too Much Blue Light?

There are times when it can be hard to get the kids to go to bed. And, when you get them bedded down, they still cannot sleep. When your children do not sleep well at night there can be a whole host of negative consequences. These can include behavioral problems, learning difficulties, daytime sleepiness, irritability, poor grades in school and even car crashes with teenage drivers. Blue Light and the Sleeping-Waking Cycle

We humans are wired to work during the day and sleep at night. So many of the body’s hormones and other functions rise and fall over a twenty-four-hour cycle. But, the body also takes its cues from the light surrounding us. There are receptors in the retina of the eye that do not help us see. They sense the amount of blue light and tell the body if it is daytime or nighttime. When the body’s clock and the signals from the eye receptors do not match there are problems.

Jet lag results when the body is expecting it to be one part of the day but the light coming into the eyes tells the body that it is another time of the day. The same thing can happen when a person switches work shifts. Both of these situations get better when the person simply continues the new regime by staying in Paris or remaining on the night shift.

The effects of blue light overexposure are disturbed sleep, tiredness during the day, trouble concentrating on the task at hand, simply not feeling well, and noticeable changes in mood.
