Is Your Child At Risk Of Harm Because Of Their Digital Devices?

We do all that we can to protect our children as they grow up. But, sometimes the dangers they face are not all that obvious. One risk in today’s age of computers, video games, tablets, and smartphones is the light that comes from these devices! Their screens emit heavily in the blue end of the visible light spectrum. So, you ask, what is the problem with that? How could too much blue light harm your child?

High Energy Blue Light and Your Child’s Eyes

Visible light ranges from the red, low energy end of the spectrum, to the high energy blue end. We see things because light enters our eyes and strikes the retina. We tell our children not to look directly at the sun because doing so for a long period will damage their eyes. But, over the long term, some people get a type of eye damage called macular degeneration. This has always been an eye disease of the elderly because it takes years for enough exposure to bright lights, etc. to damage the center of the visual field. But, today there is a lot more exposure to high energy blue light from computers, video games, tablets and even smartphones. The concern is that this increased exposure to blue light will hasten the eye damage that causes macular degeneration and cause eye damage much earlier in life.

Blue light from a video game is certainly not as dangerous to look at as looking directly into the sun. But, no one looks into the sun for hours at a time, day after day! The concern with blue light exposure and eye damage is the cumulative exposure. So, what do you do? There is a simple and safe solution to this dilemma and it does not involve taking away the video games, tablets and smartphones and putting up with the moping around and complaining. Exigo Optical Eyewear has an anti-glare coating that blocks light in the far blue end of the visual spectrum for blue light protection.

Computers, Video Games, Tablets, and Not Sleeping at Night

Blue light is the culprit in another problem with your children, getting them to bed and to sleep. Humans sleep and wake up as part of a natural process called a circadian rhythm. One of the cues in this process is the amount of blue light that enters the eyes and strikes the retina. Research has shown that not all cells in the back of the eye are used to see. There are cells that receive light and then send signals to the parts of the brain that runs the sleeping and waking cycle.

For all of human history, it got dark at night and we went to sleep. Even with fireplaces, candles, and early electric lights, the world was not as bright for as long as it is today. Now, we have computers, smartphones, tablets, and video games just a few inches from our faces emitting blue light that keeps telling the cells in our retina that it is daytime and not the time to sleep.

When the signals for sleeping and waking get mixed up there can be all sorts of side effects from behavioral disorders, to depression to overeating. A great help with this problem is the blue light protection afforded by Exigo Optical Eyewear.

Protect your child today by allowing them to go about their routine with the use of digital devices, but with the protection from the harmful effects of Blue light! Exigo Optical provides non prescription glasses with fun frames for your child to wear when using their devices, whether at home, school, or a friends house! Check them out!
