Several studies suggest that the overuse of smartphones is just like any other type of substance abuse.

Can overuse of digital devices cause a digital overdose?

The official journal of the International Society of Neurofeedback and Research(ISNR) recently published that “those overusing their devices reported feelings of loneliness, depression, isolation, and anxiety at elevated levels.”

“The behavioral addiction to smartphone use begins forming neurological connections in the brain in ways similar to how opioid addiction is experienced by people taking Oxycontin for pain relief – gradually” explained study co-author Erik Peper, Professor at San Francisco State University.

135 participants in this study showed that addiction to social media technology may affect our social connection. Researchers believe the feelings of loneliness and isolation are a consequence of replacing face-to-face interaction with a form of communication that doesn’t recognize body language or tone of voice.

We are compelled by push notifications, alerts, and vibrations on our phones because they trigger the same neural pathways in our brains that once alerted us to imminent danger. “But now we are hijacked by those same mechanisms that once protected us and allowed us to survive – for the most trivial pieces of information,” said Peper.

The cognitive impact from digital devices is a result of the blue light emitted from their digital screens.  Overexposure to this blue light can result in Digital Eye Strain (DES) causing blurred vision, irritation, and even loss of vision in some cases. Children are at a much higher risk of developing these symptoms. It’s imperative that parents take preventative measures to protect their children. There are several ways to soothe the symptoms but, to really combat this growing problem, blue light filtration glasses are the resource most recommended by doctors and experts. Exigo Optical Eyewear were created specifically for children, offering fun frames and the highest level of blue light filtration available in Non-Rx lenses.

Visual impairment is not the only physical effect caused by excessive use of digital devices. Dr. Nilesh Makwana, director and consulting physiotherapist, Muscle N Mind Center in India explained several injuries that can result from this constant use:

Text Claw

Continuous typing causes strain to joints and ligaments resulting in pain, tingling, numbness, and even deformity of the hand and wrist.

Cell Phone Elbow

This is a non-medical term which describes painful cramping and deformity of the elbows due the position in which we hold these devices.

Text Neck Syndrome

Neck pain related to posture when using devices. Text neck syndrome is a typing injury and left untreated, can lead to severe damage of the bones and muscles. *

Smartphone Pinky

The bones and joints in the hand can become deformed because of the way we hold our devices for prolonged periods.
